Digital News Journalist - Local News Reporting

We are seeking a fast-paced, curious, and highly motivated Digital News Journalist to cover local news, community events, and breaking stories for our online platforms in Hazlehurst, GA. In this role, you will be the eyes and ears of the Jeff Davis County community, delivering timely, accurate, and engaging information directly to our digital audience. We value a passion for local storytelling, strong writing skills, and a drive to get the story right above formal credentials.

Key Responsibilities

• Enterprise Reporting: Pitch, research, and write engaging daily news stories about local government, business developments, crime, and human-interest pieces in and around Hazlehurst.
• Digital First: Produce content tailored for the web, mobile apps, and social media. This includes taking photos, shooting vertical video, and writing compelling headlines.
• Community Engagement: Act as a visible presence in the community. Build a deep network of local sources, attend community events, and represent our publication at local gatherings.
• Breaking News: Respond quickly to developing situations, accidents, or severe weather. Provide fast and accurate updates to keep our audience informed in real-time.

Qualifications

• Experience & Education: While a degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field is a plus, a proven ability to tell a compelling story and a nose for news are equally valued.
• Strong Writing Skills: The ability to write clear, concise, and engaging copy under tight deadlines without sacrificing factual accuracy.
• Digital Savviness: Proficiency with digital publishing tools, social media platforms, and shooting photos/video on a smartphone.
• Local Knowledge: A strong familiarity with Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis County, and the surrounding Southeast Georgia region is highly preferred.
• Independence: A self-starter who does not wait to be directed, and who can generate daily story ideas independently.

Pay: $36,000.00 - $38,000.00 per year Benefits:
